In contention for the playoffs, Mumbai Indians defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets, in Match 54 of IPL 2023, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Chasing a target of 200 runs, MI raced to 200/4 in 16.3 overs, with Suryakumar Yadav slamming 83 runs off 35 balls. Meanwhile, Nehal Wadhera clobbered an unbeaten knock of 52 runs off 34 deliveries. Opener Ishan Kishan also found form with a knock of 42 runs off 21 balls. For RCB's bowling department, Vyshak Vijay Kumar and Wanindu Hasaranga bagged two wickets each. Initially, half-centuries from Glenn Maxwell (68) and Faf du Plessis (65) took RCB to 199/6 in 20 overs. Meanwhile, Jason Behrendorff was in fiery form for MI and scalped three wickets.
Despite being in good form, MI have their captain Rohit Sharma to worry about. The swashbuckling batter has been terrible in IPL 2023, and lost his wicket for seven off eight balls vs RCB. In IPL 2023, he has only mustered 191 runs in 11 matches, with a half-century.
So when Ishan Kishan was asked about Rohit's form from Harbhajan Singh, the wicketkeeper-batter had a witty reply. Speaking to Star Sports, Kishan said, "During practice sessions, he is focusing on his process. I understand that this is such a game that even big players struggle. But I feel that if we qualify, he has saved runs for that."
Sunil Gavaskar, who was also present, interjected, "Also for the World Test Championship."
Agreeing, Kishan added, "Yes, yes, 100 percent."
MI are currently third in the IPL 2023 points table with 12 points in 11 games, with six wins and five defeats. After IPL 2023, Rohit will be leading India in the WTC final against Australia, which will take place from June 7-11, at The Oval in London.
